ACCT11059 – Accounting, Learning and Online Communication
Assessment 1 – Step 1
In this assessment step one document, I would be personally writing key findings and reactions from readings on texts written by Martin Tuner labelled ‘Introduction Study Guide and Study Guide Chapter One’.
KCQ 1. Together, we will learn about whether accounting can help us, or perhaps hinder us, to better understand what is really going on in our firms.
This statement above truly underlines the main concept of accounting for us students. It is a question that is embedded in our minds now captivating us to really be looking forward to the learnings in the weeks ahead. I have had experience in studying accounting as I’ve done in high school and have done my certification IV in accounting. But till this day I still cannot truly understand the use of accounting as in general. But reading through both documents helped me put pieces of information together finally realizing the importance of understanding accounting.
KCQ 2. Why is that people with accounting backgrounds are so dominate in our business community in so many ways?
Answering this from my
on point of view, I would say that having that general and specialized idea of understanding the reality of a business through accounting books really elevates one’s ability to secure dominate positions. It is how that specialized person can contribute to the firm’s future. Accountants see more than just what is as specified as “profit” in the books as you’ve stated in your writings but more so what the analyzed information can be used for better judgment securing a well future for the company. I was a junior analyst in training for the ‘Public Enterprise Monitoring Unit’ in Nauru before moving to Australia for my degree. Part of my job was to collect 3-year plans from these enterprises in which they needed to plan these documents in a way that suggested they extract decision plans from their recorded financial statements. Now understand Nauru is a small undeveloped country, most individuals are experts in their field of work but sometimes not accounting and some had both. Now this showed me that people with a sense or are true experts in accounting benefits so much more, as they have the expertise to be able to plan for the company. Understanding all sides to the company’s needs. For those companies whom their CEO had no experience had to hire external consultants to sum up the financials for easier interpretation. This is why I personally plan to study and understand all aspects of my future career before actually diving in the field of work.
KCQ 3. I feel the best way to learn something is explaining what I learnt to other people, because when they ask me questions about what I’m explaining to them, I either answer them with what I know or restudy what I don’t know. (Chantelle Kadlecek).
The statement above is true in my experience, I learn more when I am either discussing with my fellow peers or helping them understand a concept or question. I find though when I’m explaining something to someone my brain just clicks, I am even surprised with my answer but know that it was correct. A lecturer once gave me that answer to my click, that after one reads an abundance of notes and listens to lectures sometimes the brain takes a bit time to digest all that information and stores it for later. Without realization one can accumulate more knowledge with time and persistence.
KCQ 4. You don’t learn by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.
Many have endured the falling over phase and have seen the light through the narrow tunnel. The statement speaks volumes to many hard-working people. Everyone has had that experience in life and no one who is now prosperous in life could say that they have not endured it. I personally have gone through the teenager phase in life, that phase in life not really knowing what truly matters. I dropped out of school due to teenage pregnancy and that life lesson, that disappointment to all of those who supported me gave me the hard-earned lesson. I did not follow rules, and I fell and by doing so I am now determined to succeed in life. One thing that helped me be where I am today is by interacting with people, helping each other reach our goals.
KCQ 5. Learning is about change: but the passive, regurgitating learning we can all too easily experience at university (and school) seems to be taking us nowhere, to not belong to us, to have no part in our lives, to not be real.
This is the controversy of learning since my childhood. It’s the passive learning environment, a one-way communication way of learning. We can still find memes on social media on this exact learning system where people still question the why and how we can relate this to our everyday lives. I am truly intrigued by how you plan to change the way you teach us, and I look forward to experiencing this firsthand. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Mesmerizing statement that really reflects how one would learn.
KCQ 6. Business is where we can make a difference, and not just in our own lives and in the lives of those close to us, but in the lives of many people.
In my opinion again, these words above by Martin Tuner speaks volumes. Businesses around the world are changing how people live their lives most of the time for good. In my experience, I remembered that time when I gave birth to my first child in 2015 here in Australia. I was fortunate to have all the materials and goods that are essential for the upbringing of my child. But as I was preparing for my return to Nauru, that thought came into mind, what if I start importing these baby stuff to Nauru for the mothers and the babies in Nauru. A win-win situation where I am providing for my community and also starting a business to be able to provide for my child. Again, just for reference and understanding Nauru is an island with little to no markets that reflects the larger ones here in Australia for example. Till this day my small business thrives with many happy customers that are genuinely thankful for this business endeavor that I started. Comes to show that experiences do matter in the business industry.
KCQ 7. When we are present in each moment, the past gently rolls up behind us and the future slowly unravels before us (Richard Levy).
The example in understanding accounting in the text using the history of the typewriter and now keyboard is a great way of making me understand how accounting came about. It also gave me the idea that nowadays whatever innovation, whatever ideas mostly have come about through the history of something. An eye-opening point where we as students could understand learning in this way.
To conclude, both documents that I’ve just read are both inspirational in a way that makes one eagerly anticipate what the next chapter is about and how one could relate to ‘their’ realities.
